![]() ![]() There is a lot of discourse surrounding the value and validity of fanfiction, but I tend to stand with the principle that spaces encouraging new creative writers are a good thing. Author Ali Hazelwood has been open about her own start as a writer of fanfic and how this helped start getting her own original work published. One look at the cover and any Star Wars fan (me, I am the Star Wars fan in question) will immediately notice the cover star characters bear a striking resemblance to two familiar faces. ![]() There’s one obvious trait about the fanfiction that sets it apart from other romance novels: the book has roots in fanfiction. This painting shows the sirens as beautiful women-birds who fly to their prey instead of luring them from afar: Odysseus has no Orpheus to drown out the lovely voices, so he orders his men to stuff their ears with wax and tie him to a mast so he can't escape, but can still hear them singing. In the adventure of the Argonauts, Jason and his men faced the danger of the Sirens with the help of the singing of Orpheus. In Odyssey Book XII Circe warns Odysseus about the dangers he will face at sea. In Greek mythology, the sirens who allured were sea nymphs beguiling enough to begin with, but with even more enticing voices. Each chapter tells a different story, though an overall arc builds across the whole book. Someone mentioned that it read like a Fantasy version of the Vietnam War, and I can see where they’re coming from. Plenty of colorful characters join the tale, as the Company experiences highs and lows. What follows are various postings and assignments, as the narrator (known as Croaker) tries to stay alive and sometimes tries to be the conscience for a bunch of heartless bastards. They end up signing on with a dubious benefactor who turns out to be more than just sketchy, (s)he turns out to be downright evil. The mercenary group, the titular Black Company, has a long and storied history, but has fallen on bad times. The conceit of the book is that the narrator is a medic for a mercenary unit and also its chronicler-historian. I found a copy of Chronicles of the Black Company, which collects the first three books in the series, so here I go. It was D&D YouTuber Matt Colville (author of Priest), who talked up the books enough to finally make me give ‘em a read. I’ve mentioned before that Fantasy isn’t my genre, so it’s no surprise I never read this. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though the Yankees boasted such great names as Mantle, Maris, and Ford, theirs was an aging team: Mantle, hobbled by injuries, was facing his last hurrah in post-season play. The Yankees, like most American League teams, reflected the status quo and, in contrast to the National League teams, had been slow to sign the new great black players (indeed, for a time, their best scouts were ordered not to sign them).
